The project
The stairs were opened up with a run of white balusters and a wood-topped landing step, so the basement feels connected to the rest of the house instead of closed off below it.
The space under the stairs became a built-in desk with wood shelves, and the family room was finished with plank flooring, recessed lights, a wrapped post, new doors and trim, and white shaker cabinets with a wood top for storage.
